From the Serde documentation, we have a great example using a Duration type. Let's say the original crate that defines this Duration type doesn't implement Serialize. We can define an external implementation of Serialize for Duration in a separate crate by using the Serde's remote attribute. To do this, we will need to create a proxy struct, let's call it DurationDef, which contains the exact same fields as the original Duration.
